Description of Organization's Main Mission

Colony Pool is one of the oldest (almost 50 years) and largest pools in the area. We are currently the only neighborhood pool with a high dive. We welcome families from all over the peninsula to become members. Our Swim Team was the 2016 Champions of the Red Division Swim Team of GPSA (Greater Peninsula Swimming Association) and placed 2nd in 2017. We strive to provide a safe, fun and enjoyable family atmosphere for our community to spend their summer.

What is your involvement with Community Knights?Let us know how you are Collaborating and sharing your gifts.
How are you collaborating with other Non-Profits and School Organizations in the Virginia Peninsula Community?

Colony pool offers swim lessons to the public every summer. We have once again opened our field to Menchville's Lacrosse team this spring for practices. And we have a few weekends coming up where Girl Scout Troops will be selling cookies to the Community from our property.

Several times this past summer we gathered canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered to the Peninsula Food Bank ad we plan to make this an annual tradition.

Last Summer we hosted First Responder Days throughout the summer and invited Newport News Police and Fire Department personnel and their families to come and enjoy the pool. This summer we plan to host Newport News First Responders for two - one week periods so that we can hopefully get a better turnout knowing that that they work on shifts and will be able to come at some point throughout the two weeks.

We will continue to work with local Boys/Girls scout troops. And to take up donations /towels for the Peninsula Animal Rescue.

We are also working on details of a special offering to active Community Knights Organizations to use Colony Pool for pool parties for their organizations.

We are always looking for news ways we can reach out and aid our community.

How will the Project/Program use the requested grant funds to directly benefit the citizens of the Virginia Peninsula of Hampton Roads?

Colony Pool has to have a functional and operational pool in order for us to provide for the Virginia Peninsula of Hampton Roads. We have several drain lines that need to be repaired/replaced; this will help us SAVE ON WATER and have a functioning baby pool.
There are several trees on the property that are dead or dying and need to be removed; we have had a few limbs fall and thankfully no one was close to getting hurt.
We need to re-surface the pool to ensure no water leakage into the underground areas that could cause damage to the pool deck.
We are in desperate need of new chairs and thanks to the CK Board for approving this request once in spring 2017; we purchased some chairs, however, we are still in need of replacing/buying more chairs for everyday use but more importantly for special events that we hold throughout the summer such as First Responder Days – where we invite 1st responders of Newport News to complimentary days of swimming; GPSA Swim meets – where other teams on the Peninsula come and compete, we need to have reliable chairs to set up for the visiting swimmers and their families; and lastly for parents of children who come for swim lessons (parents are not permitted to swim while their children are in lessons).
The swim team is in desperate need to replacing our back stroke flags at each end of the pool. We hope to buy a small shed/container to house our kick boards, pace clock, flags and other swim teams items to have them centrally located and to preserve them for years to come. Each summer, in addition to our regular GPSA division meets, we host several friendship meets with teams in other divisions as well as a Christmas in July meet - where we invite one or more GPSA teams from other divisions to come and enjoy a fun swim meet with an opportunity for swimmers to try and qualify for City Meet times as well as some fun relays - Board Short Girls and Bikini Boys relay, Summer Santa Relay, Jingle Bell Relay, Snowball Relay, Snow Coach Relay - no one keeps score - we all WIN and we have candy, ribbons and other fun prizes for all of the swimmers.

How will the Project/Program sustain or grow the community of the Virginia Peninsula of Hampton Roads?

Colony Pool strives to offer summer fun for any and all members of our greater community. We are open from Memorial Day through Labor day. We will be hosting two - week long First Responder Days this summer where we will invite NNFD and NNPD First Responders and their families to come and enjoy some days at the pool, free of charge. And, we hope to be working with a representative of the US Navy and Army, making care packages for local sailors who are deployed as well as soldiers at Fort Eustis who are here without their families.

Please give a brief description of how the Project/Program will be planned, organized and executed?

The Members of the Pool Board/Swim Team Board meet and work year-round to ensure that all of our projects get taken care of and our pool remains and safe and fun environment for all. Both Boards work together along with the members at Large to take care of the necessary repairs and improvements as needed. We have Chair-persons and committees in place to take care of all areas on the pool.

Please add any additional information you would like to share.

On behalf of Colony Pool and the Cuda Swim Team, we commend Community Knights Bingo,m all of the dedicated volunteers and especially Jennifer Brown and Teresa Michener for creating an unmatched fundraising opportunity to the many struggling non-profit organizations on the Peninsula.
