Description of Organization's Main Mission

Colony Pool is one of the oldest (almost 50 years) and largest pools in the area. We are currently the only neighborhood pool with a high dive. We welcome families from all over the peninsula to become members. We also have a 2016 Championship Red Division Swim Team of GPSA and placed 2nd in 2017. We strive to provide a safe, fun and enjoyable family atmosphere for our community to spend the summer.

How are you collaborating with other Non-Profits and School Organizations in the Virginia Peninsula Community?

There is a core group of members of Colony Pool who are committed to volunteer to earn grant money to support Colony Pool and the Colony Cuda swim team. We hope that we can continue to improve the pool in many ways. The Pool is open to anyone in the Hampton Roads Community. The number of neighborhood pools in the area is declining and we want to ensure our pool continues to function as a safe place for our families to enjoy for many summers to come.

This past spring, we opened our field to Menchville's Lacrosse team for practice purposes; we hope to do that again in Spring 2018. We worked with a local girl scout troop to use our location/facilities to sell girl scout cookies. We will soon begin working with a Boy scout group in the local area. The Board has also proposed to offer CPR classes in the near future. We hosted three First Responder days this summer, inviting NNPD and NNFD to come and enjoy a day at the pool as a thank you for their service and support . And several times throughout the summer, we collected non-perishable food items for the Peninsula Food Bank. We plan to have our youth open up the barn again this winter for weekend games and fun.
Additionally, we are always looking for ways we can reach out and aid our community at large.

How will the Project/Program use the requested grant funds to directly benefit the citizens of the Virginia Peninsula of Hampton Roads?

Colony Pool has to have a functional and operational pool in order for us to provide for the Virginia Peninsula of Hampton Roads. We have re-paved the entrances to the parking lot which has made a great improvement as well as added to our neighborhood beautification efforts, curb appeal, and it will also provide safer access for NNPS Bus stop services during the school year and to the pool during the summer. We have several drain lines that need to be repaired/replaced; this will help us SAVE ON WATER and have a functioning baby pool. There are several trees on the property that are dead or dying and need to be removed; we have had a few limbs fall and thankfully no one was close to getting hurt. We need to re-surface the pool to ensure no water leakage into the underground areas that could cause damage to the pool deck. We had to throw away quite a few of our deck chairs and chaise lounge chairs this past winter and spring; thanks to Community Knights we were able to buy a few lounge chairs at the beginning of the summer but we need to buy more before next summer.
The swim team is in desperate need to replacing our back stroke flags at each end of the pool. We have quite a few swimmers with allergies to latex and would like to purchase silicone swim caps for our swimmers for next summer. We hope to buy a small shed/container to house our kick boards, pace clock, flags and other swim teams items to have them centrally located and to preserve them for years to come. Each summer, in addition to our regular GPSA division meets, we host several friendship meets with teams in other divisions as well as a Christmas in July meet - where we invite one or more GPSA teams from other divisions to come and enjoy a fun swim meet with an opportunity to swimmers to try and qualify for City Meet times as well as some fun relays - Board Short Girls and Bikini Boys relay, Summer Santa Relay, Jingle Bell Relay, Snowball Relay, Snow Coach Relay - no one keeps score - we all WIN and we have candy, ribbons and other fun prizes for all of the swimmers.

How will the Project/Program sustain or grow the community of the Virginia Peninsula of Hampton Roads?

Colony Pool strives to offer summer fun for any and all members of our greater community. We are open from Memorial Day through Labor day. We had a cook out for our members on Saturday, May 27, 2017 and asked each of our members to contribute canned goods that we donated to the Peninsula Food Bank. We hosted several First Responder Days this summer where we invited NNFD and NNPD First Responders and their families to come and enjoy a day at the pool, free of charge. And, we are going to be working with a representative of the US Navy and Army, making care packages for local sailors who are deployed as well as soldiers at Fort Eustis who are here without their families.

Please give a brief description of how the Project/Program will be planned, organized and executed?

The Members of the Pool Board/Swim Team Board meet and work year-round to ensure that all of our projects get taken care of and our pool remains and safe and fun environment for all. Both Boards work together along with the members at Large to take care of the necessary repairs and improvements as needed. We have Chair-persons and committees in place to take care of all areas on the pool.

Please add any additional information you would like to share.

On behalf of Colony Pool and the Cuda Swim Team, we commend Community Knights Bingo, specifically Jennifer Brown and Teresa Michener for creating an unmatched fundraising opportunity to the many struggling non-profit organizations on the Peninsula.
