Project/Program Details
Describe how you calculated your Impact number in previous question.

Our rescue has helped approximately 700 residents since we have opened. This project will benefit animal lovers in our area. With this cottage, we can rescue more in need animals.

How will the Project/Program use the requested grant funds to directly benefit the citizens of the Virginia Peninsula of Hampton Roads?

Our mission is to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community by providing a means to obtain spaying and neutering. We will provide the community a kill free rescue where they can surrender their animals if necessary. Part of our mission is to provide the community, for anyone in a financial crisis, supplies or medical assistance so they are able to keep their companion and not be forced to surrender. By completing of the rescue cottage, it will allow us to pull in more animals from the local shelters and to receive surrendered animals.

It will get used to fully vet abandoned, abused and hurt animals to get them ready to be put up for adoption. This will give residents another avenue to find a companion and to stop over population of animals in the area.

The grant funds would be used for medical and any other required supplies for any surrendered pets and also to anyone in the community who needs to have some temporary assistance for their pet – medically or dietary.

How will the Project/Program sustain or grow the community of the Virginia Peninsula of Hampton Roads?

The project will provide assistance to families in case of a financial crisis to keep their pet companion. However, if the worst happens, then it will provide another no kill rescue where families can surrender their pet companion knowing the beloved pets will find another home and not be put to sleep.

Please give a brief description of how the Project/Program will be planned, organized and executed?

The project has several goals: pet health, crisis services and rescue cottage. The first step is to talk to the owner and discover as much about the circumstances as available.
• Evaluate the situation: is the owner able to keep their pet with some assistance, does the pet have extensive medical requirements which the owner can not afford – even with assistance, does the pet need medications , dental (if needed), shots or spay/neuter?
• Based on the outcome of the evaluation, a decision is made. If the owner can keep their pet with some assistance, then the owner will need to complete paperwork to continue the process. However, it is a medical emergency, the paperwork can be waivered until later to keep the pet from unnecessary pain and suffering.
• If the owner decides to surrender the pet, said pet will need to be reviewed by a vet before being put up for adoption.
• The crisis services as discussed above may be medical, food and/or other supplies. If a client is approved for services, then help is provided for his/her companion. If the request is time sensitive, then a couple of days of supplies can be provided until the application is officially approved.
• Crisis services for food requests: food will be purchased as required. Cost will depend on the type of food currently eaten and/or required medically for the animals.
• We give back to the community by donating to the Open Door Chapel of Virginia Beach Food Pantry – either by purchasing on sale items or passing on any items that were donated to our organization, which we can not use.

Our main focus for using the grant funds is to complete the Rescue Cottage.
