Alex excelled at his workplace experience at Hampton Mayor’s Book Club. We sat down with him and his skills trainer, Meghan, to learn more about his journey.
What did you learn at the internship, Alex? “I learned books, counting books, and putting stickers on books.”
How has having a skills trainer helped you? “Meghan has been helping me because she helps me cut the box.”
What’s your dream job? “I like to work! I like to work, yes!!”
How does having a ride here help you? “Yes, the ride helps me put the seatbelt on. Helps me get to work, yes!”
Meghan, what do you like about working with Alex? “I like that he is ready willing to learn and eager to be here to make a difference. We’ve had a few routine changes and Alex was flexible and adaptable. He would say, This is our new place ok let’s do it.”
What would you like people to know about working with people with disabilities? “Structure and routine is greatly important to not just people with disabilities, but everyone.”
Latosha B. Davis, HMBC Coordinator: “When he first started it was a challenge with the stickers and peeling them. He increased in speed in terms of processing the books. By the end of the week he’d already finished the month of November ahead of schedule. He went on to finish December, and is now working on January books.”
