Q & A

What is your most endearing memory with CK so far?
My most endearing memory with CK so far was hearing a supervisor encourage the student to apply for the job when she finished the internship. I loved seeing the proof that the experience with Community Knights was helping people recognize the value of our students and what they can accomplish.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I’m really proud of making connections with students outside of the classroom setting. In the classroom, I was directing the experience. On the job site, the student is taking the lead and I’m supporting. I’m empowering students from a different angle now, and it has been fun and challenging to learn how to do that well in my subbing experiences.

Why do you continue working for CK?
I continue to work for CK because it aligns so deeply with my values. Every person matters. Everyone deserves a chance. Disability is only a problem if we refuse to work with people where they are and believe in their potential to grow. I love working with people who get this and do something about it.

What would you say to someone considering becoming a program facilitator with CK?
To someone who is considering becoming a program facilitator with CK: You will not regret the time and energy you spend in this community. It will be given back to you many times over!

What have you learned about people with disabilities through working with the READY Program?
Through working with the READY program I have learned that you can see people on the job as a set of problems to be solved, a bunch of inconveniences to be avoided, or as a bundle of potential to be realized. Everyone benefits when we take the viewpoint of seeing and growing potential in each person.
