Shahd excelled in her internship with tasks like restocking and recovery—“where you pick up stuff and put it in the right place,” she explained. Through this experience, she’s discovered the importance of self-advocacy: “Where if you need help, you ask someone.” Shahd was most proud of her growing independence, saying, “Learning how to do stuff on my own.” This internship also set her up for future success. Here’s her take on how it will help her future: “Life skills, learning how to work around the store.” Her advice to other students? “Chase your dreams!”
Rahlana, Shahd’s Skills Trainer, saw incredible growth throughout Shahd’s internship. “I think in the beginning I would speak for her, so I worked with self-advocacy to have her tell people what she needs,” she shared. “I can trust her to be in different departments and not have to walk behind to make sure she’s done it right.”
Rahlana also noted the valuable lessons Shahd learned, such as collaboration, time management, and standing up for herself: “She also learned not to let people take advantage of her kindness. You can say hi to a customer, but also walk away.”
When asked about the public’s role in supporting people with disabilities, Rahlana emphasized, “I feel like I always say patience because everyone learns differently. Learn and understand your student and their needs.”
This partnership is another great example of how the READY Program helps students gain life-changing skills and confidence!
